"Moon in Williams Creek”
Sculpture by Gerry Moll
This piece is driven by an artifact from Knoxville Botanical Garden and Arboretum (KBGA), specifically the sculpture features the metal hoop that encircled the millstone that is now the center piece of the fountain in the Howell Legacy Garden. After serving as a milling stone for years, the millstone and metal hoop spent years at rest in Williams Creek. One can imagine the multitude of cyclical reflections of the moon in Williams Creek, overlaying the circular quartz millstone. The Howell’s had a particular affinity for millstones and dotted the property with them marking paths, landings, entrances, and gardens in this unique and interesting way. Another artifact from KBGA is the karst limestone base. The moon pulls on the water of the earth; this rock has been shaped by the flow of this same water. The title "Moon in Williams Creek" is in reference to the title "Moon in a Dewdrop,” a book by 1200 AD Zen Master Eihei Dogen, inspiring a constellation of thoughts about the relationship between consciousness and the moon.
Materials: millstone metal hoop, karst limestone, ceramic mosaic, and wild rosemary (Conradia canescens).
