KBGA Visitor Center Associate

Position Summary:
This position serves as the front-line ambassador for Knoxville Botanical Garden and Arboretum with a focus on hospitality and creating welcoming positive interactions for all guests, while also efficiently handling daily work duties. This position demonstrates the value of the Garden through creative and energetic communication and administration support for the institution.

Essential Job Responsibilities:

  • Greet and orient guests

  • Provide information to visitors regarding Garden history, grounds, facilities, and events

  • Inform visitors of membership levels and benefits

  • Answer main office phone. Assess and route calls.

  • Process membership and gift shop transactions

  • Maintain merchandise shelves as needed

  • Handle and reconcile cash and credit card transactions in an accurate manner

  • Keep a daily log of checks received via mail

  • Maintain order, cleanliness, and organization throughout the Visitor Center

  • Use established procedures to open and close the Visitor Center and other facilities as needed, including cleaning and preparing guest areas

  • Mitigate guest concerns, gather and share feedback with management

  • Assist with special events and projects as requested

  • Perform other assigned tasks related to the position

Minimum Job Qualifications and Competencies:

  • Excellent communication skills

  • A positive attitude with staff, volunteers and visitors

  • Excellent computer skills

  • Experience with standard office equipment such as copiers and phone systems

  • Ability to work in an organized and efficient manner

  • Ability to problem-solve and multitask while remaining organized

  • Ability to work independently

Additional favorable skills and experience

  • Interest/familiarity with gardens

  • Interest in historic sites

  • Nonprofit experience

  • Point of sale experience

  • Experience with office systems, office equipment, and cash handling.

  • Marketing and communications skills

  • Database entry and/or management

Working Conditions and Environmental Exposures:

The position is primarily a seated, indoor office position with intermittent standing and walking. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may occasionally have exposure to outside weather conditions and uneven, unpaved terrain. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. The employee may be asked to lift 20+ pounds.The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Schedule and Compensation: Must be available a minimum of 3 days per week, 9am-5pm; primarily weekdays but may also be asked to support occasional weekend events. This position has the possibility to become full time. Hourly rate begins at $15/hr and increases based on skills and experience.

KBGA Site Coordinator

Position Summary:
This position supports rental events on the grounds, providing building access and logistical support as needed. This position demonstrates a high-level of customer service and stewardship of the Garden through guest interactions and on-site support.

Essential Job Responsibilities:

  • Arrive before event and review written event details

  • Provide timely access to venue for rental group

  • Place signage for parking and event way-finding and direct attendees to venue space or parking as needed

  • Perform routine interval check-ins with the renter and event progress throughout the duration of the event.

  • Perform pre- and post-visual inspections of the event space and ensure all equipment is returned to appropriate locations

  • Complete end of event documentation and secure all rental facilities

  • Communicate with the KBGA Event Manager throughout the duration of the event, as necessary

Minimum Job Qualifications and Competencies:

  • Courteous and responsive to all guests

  • Ability to problem-solve and multitask while remaining organized

  • Ability to work independently

  • Mitigate guest concerns, gather and share feedback with management

  • Use established procedures to open and close the Visitor Center and other facilities as needed, including cleaning and preparing guest areas

  • Ability to move objects up to 20 lbs and ascend and descend stairways

  • Ability to move across uneven surfaces and tolerate outdoor conditions

Schedule: Weekday evenings and weekend day/evening availability is required. Hours vary from 5 hours/month to 15 hours/week, depending upon site coordinator availability and rental schedule.

Pay: $15/hour
