Open to professional and informal educators alike, GrowTeachKnox is dedicated to equipping educators to engage their students with the outdoors.
Local environmental, gardening, and education professionals will provide hands-on learning for educators to better integrate lessons in the classroom with nature. With topics from how to find funding to options beyond raised beds, educators will leave the day with the confidence to take their students outside, allowing students to more tangibly connect what they are learning to what they see in the wider world.

10:10-11:00: Breakout Session 1
- Finding Funding & Resources
While working with students in nature doesn’t have to break the bank, there are times when additional funds and resources can enhance the outdoor learning experience. However, it can be hard to know where to look and how to increase your chances of being selected. Learn how your program can gain the funding and support it needs and how to gain approval to use these funds in a school setting.
- Unconventional Gardening
Whether you’re limited by space or just looking for fun, new ways to garden with students, this session is for you. In addition to a straw bale gardening demonstration, this session covers everything from mushroom logs to growing in the classroom. Participants will leave full of ideas on how to take gardening beyond traditional raised bed and in ground garden techniques.
11:10-12:00: Breakout Session 2
- Horticultural Therapy
The mental, physical, and social benefits of spending time outdoors are endless. Learn from a trained horticulture therapist the benefits of interacting with students in nature, and discover hands on techniques to create a positive experience for students of all ability levels and backgrounds.
- Linking Standards to the Outdoors
Using the outdoors as a classroom can lead to rich learning experiences, but it can require a rethinking of how lessons are normally taught. In this session, you’ll hear examples from teachers and other school-based professionals on how to integrate standards with outdoor learning, and you’ll have an opportunity for discussion and brainstorming with your peers looking to do the same.
12:40-1:30: Breakout Session 3
- For the 3rd session, the two most popular sessions will be repeated, to provide opportunity for all who want to attend to do so.
